THE DALTON FURY SQUAD

Mentre le forze talebane afgane stavano per essere sconfitte, i combattenti stranieri di al-qaeda si erano ritirati sulle white mountain (area montuosa nell’est dell’afghanistan al confine con il pakistan) dove meglio potevano difendersi sfruttando la particolare orografia del territorio e la massiccia presenza di caverne (dove erano state installate basi e ricoveri) tra cui appunto il complesso di grotte di tora bora ritenuta la base operativa di bin laden.

L’operazione per la cattura di bin laden e altri VIP di al-qaeda fu chiamata “JAWBREAKER” ebbe inizio il 3 dicembre con l’inserzione delle avanguardie formate da operatori delle army sf e della CIA supportate in seguito dalle truppe dell’alleanza del nord e da altre forze speciali sia statunitensi (DELTA,NSW,CCT) che non (SAS,SBS inglesi e KSK tedesco) .

La battaglia ebbe termine il 17 dicembre quando anche l’ultimo complesso di grotte fu bonificato, ma l’obbiettivo della missione non fu raggiunto in quanto sia bin laden che altri membri di spicco di al qaeda riuscirono a sfuggire alla cattura ripiegando nella aree tribali del confinante pakistan.
